Book of Cities

I got this book at Magma bookshop years ago, during my This Is London phase.

Book of Cities by Piero Ventura features lots of different cities. One city on a spread with a short piece of text to accompany the illustration. Like Richard Scarry‘s pictures, there are a lot of things going on in them. You just have to look at them carefully. The fun is in the details.

I have to admit, the kids have not actually read this book; they’ve only looked at the pictures. The words are a little too grown up and not snappy enough to hold the attention of a 4 year old. But hey ho, does it matter? The pictures are beautiful!

And this is how the story begins.

A city is a place where thousands of people live and work. Some people prefer to live in cities because more is happening there. They like the rapid, bustling pace of city life. They enjoy crowds and busy streets. They like tall buildings and constant activity.
